Smith and Chetco Steelhead Fishing Report
Rain has returned here in Northern California and Southern Oregon giving the Chetco river a much needed rise in flow and new color. Fishing on the Chetco has been good for multiple hook ups on both hatchery and wild steelhead 7 to 12 pounds. There has been a mix of both runback steelhead a chrome bright new fish. More rain is forecasted for later this week with another river rise and more added color. The Chetco river has had great color for as low as it is and steelhead fishing here is still good. It is now just over 900 cfs and has some color. Steelhead are scattered throughout the entire Chetco including the upper wild and scenic section and the lower river. Quality steelhead are being caught every day right now for both the boats and bank fishermen. Sidedrifting from a driftboat or the bank will be best with Pautzke's natural cured roe and a quickie puffball. Now with the clearer river conditions back trolling Brad's wiggler plugs are a good choice. You should call ahead and check current river conditions as they can change here very quickly. There are many steelhead in the rivers up and down the North Coast and now is the time to look at planning a trip for steelhead fishing on the North Coast rivers. Best steelhead fishing times on the North coast is Jan. through March. The Smith and Chetco rivers are very good bets for both wild and hatchery steelhead 8 to 10 pounds with big fish in the teens a real possibility on every outing. Every season 20 plus pound steelhead are caught on these rivers every season. We will have this seasons up-to-date river fishing reports weekly through March for both the Smith and Chetco rivers.
