Smith and Chetco Steelhead Fishing Report

The Smith river started out really high today and nearly unfishable but great fishing is on the way. Now is the time to plan your trip for some incredible steelhead fishing on the Smith ad Chetco rivers. Both rivers are loaded with fresh steelhead and the Smith river is dropping in right now. Friday should be high and pushy but there are some great bank fishing opportunities during this drop. Looks like there will great fishing on the Chetco very soon as the Chetco is dropping at the time of this report. Next week should be spectacular on both rivers. There is some rain forcasted after the weekend but just a small chance at this time. Sidedrifting from a driftboat or the bank will be best with roe and a quickie puffball. Mostly small hatchery fish are being caught with a few larger adults mixed in. You should call ahead and check current river conditions as they can change here very quickly. There are many steelhead in the rivers up and down the North Coast and now is the time to look at planning a trip for steelhead fishing as the rivers come back into shape on the North Coast rivers. These new rains are really sparking another wave of steelhead to enter these rivers. Best steelhead fishing times on the North coast is Jan. through March. The Smith and Chetco rivers are very good bets for both wild and hatchery steelhead 8 to 10 pounds with big fish in the teens a real possibility on every outing. Every season 20 plus pound steelhead are caught on these rivers every season. We will have this seasons up-to-date river fishing reports weekly through March for both the Smith and Chetco rivers.
